Indonesia’s vast oceans are rich with natural resources that are highly attractive to foreign businesses. Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo saw a need to protect Indonesia’s territorial integrity and contribute to the blue economy of coastal communities, driving him to build businesses that could maximize Indonesia’s marine resources.
One such business was built in the Bima, West Nusa Tenggara -- a coastal district with a rich cache of pearls. PT Tirtamas Mutiara was established in 1986 after receiving the necessary permits from the Director General of Fisheries. The company initially began with foreign investment since at the time, Japan were the leading experts in pearl cultivation.
By 1988, similar businesses were established in the districts of Solato dan Tengge under the name of PT Bima Sakti Mutiara, without foreign investment. In 2020, under the leadership of Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo, the company changed its name to PT Bima Sakti Bahari, signaling an expansion in its scope of business to now include non pearl.
In 2021, PT Bima Sakti Bahari acquired the foreign investment in PT Tirtamas Mutiara, making it a fully Indonesia-owned enterprise under the umbrella of PT Bima Sakti Bahari.
